Gifts from Donor-Advised Funds

A donor-advised fund (DAF) is an account a donor establishes with a financial institution (popular providers include Fidelity, Charles Schwab, and Vanguard, among many others).

A donation is made directly to the DAF, and a tax receipt is issued to the donor for the full amount of the contribution. This allows the donor to have flexibility in the future to determine which charities will receive funds. Those monies are then governed by the DAF and invested by the financial institution.

To access the funds for charitable donations, the donor submits a grant request to the DAF-holding company for a specific amount to be donated to a particular charity. The IRS has established explicit guidelines on which types of gifts or programs can be funded by the DAF.
